The teacher has to be able to teach the theory, the pedagogic skills, and the practice of each of the subjects. This is a tricky thing to do.
There are many reasons why a teacher might have the skills to teach, but if a teacher takes on too much of one discipline, she is bound to fail. In a time when teachers are expected to be science and math experts, it’s important to remember that they should also be knowledgeable about all aspects of the subject, not just one aspect.
But we’re not talking about teaching a science class, we’re talking about teaching the arts. I’m not really sure what it is that I would teach a future college graduate, but I’d like to think that I would at least make sure that they had a basic understanding of the subject they wanted to teach in college. The question is more whether they would be able to teach the subject with the teacher’s background and the subject they want to teach.
If you want to know what teachers around the world are like, look them up. The best-known group of teachers is the “masters of science education”. They are the teachers that teach science in a variety of high schools around the world. These teachers are not so unusual.
