Squirrels are known for their ability to climb trees. However, can they swim? The answer is not so straight forward. There are many different types of squirrel species and some of them have a natural instinct to stay away from water. For example, the Eastern Gray Squirrel will attempt to find any way possible back up onto a tree when it falls into water. On the other hand, there are also some types that enjoy swimming as well such as the Northern Flying Squirrel and California Ground Squirrel which both have been observed in aquatic environments by scientists.

In general though, if you see an Eastern Brown or Red Fox squirrel near water then it generally has an aversion towards getting wet – this can be because they live in drier climates where moisture is scarce making contact.
