A snake can swim? You might think that’s a silly question, but it actually has an answer. If you are referring to the slithering reptiles that live on land and have no legs, then snakes cannot swim. However, if you are referring to sea snakes or water-dwelling amphibians like frogs or salamanders, they can indeed swim. You may be wondering why there is such a difference between what snakes can do in the water. The answer has to do with the structure of their lungs and ribs, which makes it impossible for them to breathe like other creatures who spend most or all of their lives underwater. With this anatomical limitation, they are unable to create enough momentum in order to propel themselves through the water, so they just sink straight down instead. Luckily for us land-loving humans though, these aquatic slithering reptiles don’t live anywhere near our homes! The reason why a snake cannot swim has to do with its anatomy.
